--it's an outtie. His pediatrician said it's an umbilical hernia (defined as "an outward bulging (protrusion) of the abdominal lining or part of the abdominal organ(s) through the area around the belly button"). Sounds and looks painful, but it apparently doesn't bother him. It should heal on its' own within the next couple of years. But for now, his button is a little broken.
