here comes trouble.

This week, I bought a couple of 6-9 month onesies that were on clearance, for little Emery to wear this winter. Behind on laundry, I resorted to putting one of them on him, thinking it would be way too big. No. Not a problem for my 12 week old son. It fits just fine.

house of pain

I sometimes long for Saturday mornings, as I have a new tradition of sneaking in a couple of well earned (if I do say so myself) sleep-filled hours while my boys spend some quality time together. Today should have been no exception. The yellow jackets that have infested our back porch decided to disrupt our peaceful routine, though. I woke quickly to the shrill cry of my little one and Nate's frantic plea to hold the baby. It turns out that within 20 seconds of daddy and son stepping outside, a horrid wasp landed on Emery's forehead. Nate's new found fatherly reflexes swung into high gear- he stepped inside and batted it away, leaving Emery startled and very upset. After making sure he hadn't been stung, it took me ten minutes to settle him down and convince him that his doting dad was trying to help, not hurt, him...

After Nate ended the hornet's life with a People magazine, Max wanted some of the action and decidedly ate him before we could blink. Bravely, Nate went outside soon after and discovered that we have a whole nest directly above the porch. Needless to say, we won't be utilizing our sliding door for quite some time.

kelly time

The ticket stub says it all-- Adult Evenin. Thanks, dear friends, for a lovely night of grown up conversation (even if it was all about our children), dancing in the aisles of the theater, and laughing til I cried. I needed that.

so fresh and so clean, clean

After his bath, we tried out a new 'do... it became a little missionary in front, a lot of buckwheat in back.
His hair has a mind of its' own.

Like father, like son.

Best Friends

I am officially done with maternity leave and have started working again, although only for an average of 10 hours a week and mostly from home. With my mom out of town, Emery escorted me to a meeting I had at the office this afternoon. I was a bit frazzled, but we survived. He was starving as we begun the car ride home, so we stopped by the Jiles for a little snack break.

Seeing the babies together, I do hope that they will love each other, like their moms do. And that they will want to be friends, like their moms have been for oh so long. Trips to Disneyland, afternoons at the playground, letters back and forth on missions, funny phone calls every day... the list goes on and on.

It's official

We were working on a little tummy time this morning and after about 15 seconds, he rolled right over. By the time I got the video camera, he was good and ready to be done, but I persisted and got it on film. He's not very happy doing it, but he did it again none the less!

looking back

One month ago today, he was blessed by his daddy
and brought tears to the eyes of his Great Aunt Holly as she held him.

How'd he do that?

This morning, Emery was not content to hang out while I pumped. When I tried to put him in the swing, he was not pleased and started arching his back and pushing his legs against the seat, propelling himself out. He's one strong little man! I decided to put him in his pack n' play, which is one of the few safe places for him in his anger, and then I went into the family room to pump. It was a rough couple of minutes listening to him scream, but I went from panicky to ecstatic when he started talking and cooing (as he has not been a self-comforter and I thought "what a milestone!"). I went in to get him the second that I finished and found him like this:
The only thing alarming about it was that I had put him in perpendicular to the way that he was facing... he had turned himself 90 degrees-- it was a bit startling, to say the least! Although I should have expected something like this, as last week he rolled over from belly to back when he was at grandma's. If he's doing this at two months, I'm not sure what to expect next!
This is probably a little view of how he accomplished such a feat-- he arched his back, pushed down with his sturdy legs, and moved himself in quite a fashion...
I think he looks a bit like Uncle Corey (with hair) as a baby in this one:

an evening of Olympics

Thanks to grandma and grandpa, we all had a yummy dinner and a nice time seeing the USA volleyball team take gold, along with making fun of, I mean watching, the closing ceremonies.

a lunch date

When Emery was still in the womb, The Cheesecake Factory opened up here in SLC. We've been wanting to go, but heard the crowds were a nightmare. FYI- they're still a nightmare at 2pm on a Saturday, but we braved them anyway.

My two cute boys and I had a fun lunch.

The carrot cake cheesecake was divine.

We even enjoyed a stroll at Nordstrom afterwards, as the center of our universe fell asleep.

our new favorite thing- the sling!

Third time is the charm, as they say... after trying the Baby Bjorn and the Maya wrap, we discovered the Moby sling. Although I have a strong desire to list the cost of each and to say that the Moby is priceless, I'll try to contain myself. Plus, I have no desire for my husband to know how much has been spent on trying to have my hands free. It's just difficult to not be excited, as it's altering my world. We were able to go to the Farmer's Market at Thanksgiving Point this afternoon to pick up a loaf of Great Harvest Honey Wheat with a son that seemingly enjoyed himself. With the wind in his hair and his hand grasping mine, this family had an actual outing that didn't involve screaming and tears. It was breathtakingly beautiful-- no exaggerations!

Deceptively Delicious

As I'm sure that I'll utilize Jessica Seinfeld's cookbook to hide the veggies in Emery's future chicken fingers, we have already started disguising things. We've found a trick for getting in a little "belly time" (as Nate says) we like to call playing on daddy's lap. I love seeing him develop into such a strong little guy and I do find his cheeks and chin addictively delicious.
